Every day, you walk along the same route. You step on the same pavement and pass by the same trees.

But have you ever stopped to think?

Is the ground beneath your feet really just a standard path, or is it a space that contains many layers of design?

For most people, landscape means a few trees, a bit of lawn, perhaps a park. In reality, however, landscape involves a systematic infrastructure, a planned technical order, and a multi-layered design logic. In this article, I want to explain this through photographs I took from my own professional experience.

The path you walk on guides you without you realizing it. It draws your attention to certain points.

In fact, with details you often do not even notice, it manages water and prevents it from accumulating on the surface of the paths you walk on. That is why landscape does not only design space, but also human behavior. It slows you down, speeds you up, or makes you stop. Sometimes it makes you sit under a tree, sometimes it leaves you feeling alone in a wide open space, and sometimes it makes you lift your head and look around through striking elements.

Throughout the years I worked in the field, the clearest thing I observed was this:

In a well-designed landscape, people do not adapt themselves to the design. The design guides people naturally, within an intuitive flow. While people move forward without thinking about where they step, they are actually moving within a scenario drawn by design. The most successful projects are those in which people do not conflict with space; rather, the space intuitively reads human behavior and makes it easier.

How Do the Paths We Walk On Actually Work?

In daily life, when we look at a pedestrian path, we usually see only the surface:
A granite stone, a neat paving pattern, and clean joint lines… Yet this surface is only the visible part of a multi-layered system.

Take a granite-covered pedestrian path, for example. At first, we design the granite paving for that path. The stone covering we see on the surface provides aesthetics and durability. Yet the real elements that determine the performance of this surface are the layers underneath it.

A typical system can be constructed as follows; we can show it with an example sequence:

• Granite paving stone
• Bedding layer (sand or fine aggregate)
• Base course (stabilized material)
• Compacted subgrade

Water Management: The Invisible Design

In this system, one of the details that is often overlooked yet plays a critical role is water management. One of the tools we can mention in water management is the joint. The joint allows the surface to function, balances stress, and helps water move in a controlled way.

One of the most common problems encountered on site is the omission or faulty application of one of the layers. Most of the time, the problem appears on the surface; the stone becomes loose, breaks, or collapses. But the real problem is usually underneath.

The condition seen in the photograph occurs when the soil layer beneath the finished stone paving shifts due to the effect of water; this ground movement then causes the paving above to deteriorate as well.

Landscape elements are not only aesthetic objects, but also performance-based ones. The performance of a pedestrian path is measured by its load-bearing capacity, water permeability, resistance to freeze-thaw cycles, and deformation behavior over time.

Invisible Systems

Just as with hardscape, planting design is not limited to the visible surface. The health and sustainability of a green area are directly related not only to plant selection, but also to the system constructed beneath it. In planting applications, just as in hardscape systems, there is a layered structure.

One of the situations I most frequently observed on site is irregular plant growth occurring in different parts of the same project. At first glance, this may look like a design flaw, but in most cases the problem stems from drainage elevations, compacted soil, or faulty irrigation zoning. In other words, the problem lies not in aesthetics, but in the invisible layers of the system.

For a healthy planted area:

• Suitable soil mixture (a balance of organic and mineral content)
• Drainage layer (for the removal of excess water)
• Irrigation infrastructure
• Appropriate volume and depth for root development
• and many other technical criteria must be evaluated together.

Especially in tree applications, the root zone is a critical issue. A compacted ground that cannot breathe or has limited access to water directly affects plant development. For this reason, in a properly designed landscape, not only the visible upper form of the plant but also the invisible space necessary for root development is planned.

One of the common problems encountered on site is that this infrastructure is not adequately taken into account. Plants that initially appear healthy may fail to develop over time or begin to show signs of decline.

The structure of the soil, how much water it retains or how quickly it drains away, how far the roots are able to spread… all of these directly affect how the plant will appear above ground. That is why sometimes, in the same area, one patch of grass can look healthy while another beside it dries out. Or a newly planted tree may look fine at first but gradually weaken over time.

What Could Be the Possible Causes?

• Drainage problem: Water accumulating in some areas while remaining insufficient in others negatively affects root development. Patchy drying patterns like the ones seen in the photograph are usually signs of non-uniform drainage.

• Soil compaction: Especially in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic, the soil becomes compacted over time. This prevents the roots from receiving air and makes it harder for water to infiltrate the soil.

• Irregular irrigation system performance: Due to sprinkler placement or pressure differences, some areas may not receive enough water while others may receive too much.

• Sub-layer problems: An inadequate or poorly designed base layer prevents water from being distributed properly. This then appears on the surface as irregular drying or weak growth.

The same situation can also be observed in trees. The general drying seen in the tree in the photograph is usually caused not by a single factor, but by a combination of planting errors, root zone problems, and deficiencies in water management.

• Insufficient root zone volume or compacted soil: If roots cannot find enough space to develop, the tree quickly enters stress.

• Lack of drainage or water accumulation: If tree roots remain constantly in water, they become deprived of oxygen and begin to rot.

• Wrong species selection or adaptation problem: If the plant is not suitable for the climate and soil in which it is placed, its development is directly affected.

• Irrigation errors: Insufficient or irregular irrigation is a critical problem, especially for newly planted trees.

In many cases, this situation originates not from the plant itself, but from the system constructed beneath it.

That is why reading landscape only as the visible green surface or the hard ground is an incomplete approach. Beneath every step lies engineering, beneath every surface lies a system, and behind every plant lies an ecological balance.
The ground you step on is actually the result of a design you hardly notice.

So do not dismiss the places you step on as simply “landscape.” Because if there is a properly designed infrastructure beneath that surface, then the quality you see above is not a coincidence.

Spot: Mycelium composites are a family of materials that doesn’t fit into the easy shortcut of “everything natural is good.” In the right place they can be genuinely promising; in the wrong place they can turn into something you keep wrestling with.

At a fair once, I picked up a small panel sitting at the edge of a booth. At first touch it felt like “plastic foam”: light, firm, with a matte surface. Then I ran my finger along the edge and the feeling shifted; the cross-section had a tiny fibrous weave, like compressed straw held together not by glue but by… something else. When I brought it closer, there was a faint trace in the smell too—something like damp soil mixed with mushroom. When I pressed the edge it didn’t snap with a “click.” It compressed and came back, yet it also left a thin crack line at the same time. A strange question landed in my head: “Is this alive?” “Alive” might be a little romantic, but it clearly wasn’t behaving like a completely dead material either. It looked like plastic, but it wasn’t plastic; more like biology that had learned how to resemble plastic.

What we call a mycelium-based composite is, in short, using the underground network of fungi (mycelium) as a kind of natural binder to stitch agricultural waste and fibrous residual materials together. Mycelium plays the role of an “adhesive” here: straw, sawdust, hemp shives, coffee grounds—whatever you have—mycelium grows through them and weaves a network. Then that growth is stopped, typically by drying, heating, or a similar process. In everyday language: the material seems to “weave itself” inside a mold.

Until a few years ago, this story mostly circulated in pavilions and design fairs. Visually it is strong; it carries a “natural yet futuristic” aesthetic, and it is easy to narrate: a material born from waste, compostable surface, low energy… But over the last two years, the tone feels like it has shifted. The fair-object vibe still exists, yet it no longer feels sufficient on its own; people are asking for more “performance.” What does it do in fire? Does it absorb sound? Does it change when it sees humidity? Can production be standardized? That question set pushes the material from being a trendy keyword toward real project tables. The literature shows a similar drift: production parameters, inspection and standardization, and building physics (heat–moisture behavior, strength, fire, and acoustics) are being discussed more intensely.

Where does mycelium work, and where does it not?

In landscape practice—especially in the public realm—this question strips away romance quickly. Because landscape has “real-life criteria” that can be unforgiving: vandalism, maintenance budgets (or the lack of them), freeze–thaw cycles, UV, rain, warranties, procurement units, supply chains. Good intentions don’t carry a material on site by themselves.

Plastic feel, organic reality

Mycelium composites can often have a lightness and texture reminiscent of “plastic foam.” Sometimes there is a velvety matte surface; in the cross-section, a fibrous porosity. That porosity looks like a good thing—because it opens doors to lightness and sound absorption—but the same porosity also likes water, holds dirt, and can carry a risk of “denting and staying dented” under impact.

A concrete detail: on one prototype, when I pressed my nail into the surface, a small mark remained. It wasn’t like plastic; it was more like the crust of dry bread—slightly yielding. On another piece, when I rubbed the edge as if sanding, a fine dust appeared; fibers broke and drifted away.

Mycelium composite can partially replace materials in scenarios like: low-load interior surfaces, exhibition elements, decorative partitions, acoustic panels, temporary pavilion skins, packaging-like protective parts… But replacing these is difficult: outdoor seating surfaces that take constant hits, façade claddings that will stay under sun and rain for years, and standardized public furnishings where we expect consistent performance for a long time.

Let’s put two clear sentences down. In an interior environment with controlled humidity, as a temporary exhibition or pavilion element, mycelium composite can make sense; because lightness and form freedom increase installation speed.
And another: if used as a bench surface in a heavily used urban park exposed to rain–sun cycles, it will likely cause headaches; because water, UV, and impact arrive at once, and the material’s “delicate” side becomes dominant.

Water, UV, impact: the material’s three-part exam

Water is one of the most critical topics. Mycelium composites can be prone to water absorption; this raises both the risk of swelling or deformation and the tendency for the surface to stain. Once, a few drops fell on a small sample: the drop darkened the surface instantly and left a mark when it dried. Even indoors, that creates the question “How will this be cleaned?” Outdoors, water is not just water; rain can be acidic, it carries mud, and freeze–thaw cycles can enlarge microcracks.

UV is more subtle. Sunlight changes the color of organic materials; with mycelium composites, the possibility of fading or turning into a chalky texture is often discussed. Meaning the material might lose its first-day beautiful matte look and become more “dusty.” In a landscape project, this transformation affects not only aesthetics but also perceived hygiene; municipal teams might look at it and ask, “Is this dirt, or is this just the material now?”

Impact and intensive use… here the material can oscillate between two behaviors: sometimes it dents and recovers; sometimes it forms a fibrous fracture line. A hard kick, a bicycle bump, a skateboard hit, children stepping on the same spot repeatedly—these are daily realities outdoors. If mycelium composite is not reinforced by high-density pressing, coatings, or similar processes, it can struggle to make peace with that daily life.

The “biodegradation” side is also double-edged. By definition, being able to break down under appropriate conditions is described as a positive feature; but in the public realm, this can sometimes mean “limited service life.” The material’s life cycle needs to match the project’s expected life. In landscape we often assume 10–15 years or more; in some scenarios, mycelium composite may not carry that expectation.

Is it suitable for outdoor furniture? The honest answer is: conditionally. In a semi-open space that is covered, does not receive rain, and is not in direct sun; supported with an appropriate protective layer (a bio-based coating, something water-repellent yet breathable), and with modular part replacement planned, limited use could be considered. But in open areas—especially where vandalism and intensive use risks are high—it usually remains an “experiment”; it struggles to become long-term, standardized urban furniture.

Third clear sentence: In an interior space with an acoustic problem (for example, an activity hall in a youth center), as a wall or ceiling surface that will not take impact, a mycelium-based panel can work; because its porous structure can “swallow” part of the sound energy.

Fire behavior: speaking without saying “non-combustible”

One claim we often hear about mycelium composites is “fire resistance.” Here we need to be careful with language: saying “non-combustible” is risky both technically and ethically. Fire behavior varies depending on the fungal species, substrate, density, production method, and especially the test standard. Some studies discuss results such as the surface charring and slowing flame spread, or heat release being relatively low under certain conditions; but that is not an automatic label for every product.

A landscape parenthesis: in public furnishings, fire risk often comes not as “accident” but as “intent.” A trash bin is set on fire, a bench is exposed to flame, a cigarette butt is left behind. So fire performance should be considered not only as flame spread, but also smoke production, dripping behavior, and whether repair is possible afterwards—more everyday questions, really. Some producers and researchers try fire-retardant approaches using mineral additives, different fiber mixes, or surface coatings; but there is also the “at what cost?” question. Added chemicals can weaken the environmental claim, or alter reuse and compostability scenarios.

Acoustics: the pleasant side of porosity

Acoustics is one of the areas where mycelium composites look like they have a “natural advantage.” With a simple analogy: sound hits a hard, flat surface and bounces back; but when it enters a porous surface, it loses part of its energy through friction in tiny cavities. The fibrous-porous structure of mycelium composites, with the right density and surface design, can support this absorption. So the answer to “Can it be an acoustic panel?” is often “it can.”

But there is a small contradiction. If you seal the surface against water and dirt, you also close pores, and acoustic performance may drop. If you leave the surface open, dust retention and cleaning problems increase. So in acoustic applications, you may need a thin layer that protects without fully sealing, or a secondary solution such as a permeable textile or grille carrier in front of the panel. These details can look minor; in a project, they can be the parts that consume the most time.

Production technique and scale: mold, grow, stop

The most critical difference in producing mycelium composites is this: the material is not merely “manufactured”; to a degree it is “grown.” A fibrous mix placed into a mold integrates as mycelium grows under suitable temperature and humidity. Then growth is stopped; steps like drying or sterilization stabilize the product. At workshop scale this process is flexible and creative—an excellent playground for a designer. In mass production, the same process becomes harder: contamination risk, keeping the same density batch to batch, dimensional tolerances, shrinkage and form loss during drying…

Once, on a piece taken out of a mold, the corners were not as sharp as we expected; it was as if the material had “rounded” them. This can even be aesthetically pleasing, but it creates trouble in connection details. You want to screw into it; the screw tears fibers. You think of anchors; holding strength can be weak. You try adhesive; the surface absorbency prevents uniform bonding. In other words, mycelium composite still tests the designer on “connections and detailing.” This is one reason why standardization talk has increased lately: the material has a beautiful story, but the “safe recipe that everyone can use the same way” is not fully settled yet.

Use scenarios: small scenes of “works / doesn’t work”

Imagine the time pressure of an exhibition build. It’s 22:00 and the pavilion skin has to be finished. The lightness of mycelium panels is gold here: two people carry them, no heavy crane, fast assembly. And the surface’s “mat organic” language absorbs light nicely; it photographs well. Under these conditions, mycelium composite works: short life, controlled indoor climate, low impact. And at the end, a “dismantle and recycle or compost” scenario can come onto the table—of course where it truly goes and how it is processed is a separate discussion.

Now take the same material outdoors. A municipal procurement team looks at a sample bench piece: “What is the warranty period? How is it cleaned? Does graffiti come off? If a part breaks, is there a spare?” These are the real questions of landscape. Mycelium composite struggles here, because answers often start with “under this condition.” If the climate is harsh (freeze–thaw), rainfall is high, sun is intense, vandalism is common… risk grows. In that situation it becomes a headache; because the project stops defining the material’s limits, and the material starts defining the project’s limits.

A third scene: an interior co-working space; high ceiling, reverberation is annoying. The budget for acoustic panels is limited, but there is also a search for a “material with a story.” Mycelium composite can be reasonable here. The panel is placed high on the wall so it won’t take impact; its surface is protected with a permeable layer that won’t trap dust; a certified product with suitable fire performance is selected. Under these conditions it works; because the problem (echo) and the solution (porosity) align well.

A fourth scene, less discussed: the maintenance crew. Spring cleaning, a habit of washing with a hose. Washing a mycelium composite surface with a hose can mean “insisting on water exposure.” The surface darkens, dries with stains, fibers lift at edges. The maintenance crew quite reasonably says, “I can’t deal with this.” And at that point, material selection becomes not only a design issue, but also an issue of maintenance culture. In landscape, a material lives in the hands of the municipality, not on the designer’s table.

The ethics of the material: sometimes good, sometimes just a story

The ethical side of mycelium composites is worth discussing: using agricultural waste streams, the possibility of local production, reducing dependence on chemical binders—these are genuinely hopeful. But the “carbon” narrative may not always be smooth because steps like sterilization and drying require energy; energy source, logistics, scale, and service life change the calculation. Sometimes the “green” look of the material can even become a stage for greenwashing: visually organic, narratively bright, yet with an unclear supply chain and uncertain lifespan. What is needed here is a gentle but clear line: not everything that looks natural is automatically good; what is good is good together with its conditions.

Landscape Architecture and Plant Use

When using plant material in the study of landscape architecture, along with the principles of design, the dendrological characteristics of plants should also be taken into account. Plants used and designs made without taking into account dendrological features can lead to incorrect results. Because plants are dynamic beings, they react differently according to the seasons and the ecology they are in. Each plant has a different visual effect and aesthetic value depending on the size, shape, color, texture characteristics. The functional properties of plants also differ according to their dendrological characteristics. Without having detailed information about the plants, the choices made only by looking at their pictures in the catalogs will not give the right results.

Grouping of Plant Material

Plants used in landscape design are divided into three groups: annual, biannual, perennial according to their lifespan and habitus characteristics.

Annual Plants

Plants that complete their vegetative and generative development within a year, end their life after creating seeds, and can produce them with seeds in subsequent years are called annual plants. For example, petunia, steamboat smoke, marigold, fireflower, zinnia

Biennial Plants

Plants that complete their vegetative development, that is, leaf and shoot development in the first year, show generative development in the second year, end their life at the end of the second year, and are produced by seed in the following years are called biannual plants. For example, foxglove, snapdragon, foxglove, hosnuyusuf

Perennial Plants

Perennials, even if the above-ground part dries up at the end of the vegetation period, form new shoots with root or underground organs at the beginning of the next vegetation period. Examples include some herbaceous plants such as chrysanthemums, carnations, and woody plants such as trees, treetops, and shrubs.

What is dendrology?

The branch of science that studies the size, form, color, texture, characteristics of woody plants and their cultivation techniques is called Dendrology. Dendrological features of plants have a very different psychological effect on the appearance of space. For example, the psychological effect that white poplar, which has pyramidal development, has on humans is different from the panicle willow, the branches of which hang down. Scattered, soft-topped trees create a feeling of peace and comfort in a person, while trees with dark green leaves that develop in the form of columns and pyramids, especially create fear, respect and discipline in a person. Yesilmaz. But when they are used too much, they have monotony, annoying effects. Trees with a panicle form, which are kept in solitary form or in small numbers in green areas, give a person a feeling of peace, closure to the inner world and sadness. Yesilmaz the colors of plants also have a psychological effect on humans. For example, brightly colored leafy plants give happiness and joy to people, while dull and dull-colored green trees create inner distress.

Dendrological properties of plant material

When using plant material, it is of great importance to know its ecological properties, as well as its properties such as size, shape, color effect and texture. It is a very important element that the plants that will be used when designing will develop in accordance with the geography of design and application. Because if the plant does not show the desired development, the effect of the design decreases. For this reason, we should know the dendrological properties and ecological properties of plants well.

Size is an important feature when choosing plants in design. Because the size of the plant directly affects the scale of the design.

In terms of size, we can collect plants in 7 heads.

• Large Trees are the group of plants with the largest scale. Their height is 15 meters and more.

• Small Trees (Treetops) are distinguished from large trees by the fact that they have a shorter trunk. they are plants that can be dec 4-8 meters tall.

• Large Shrubs are plants that grow no more than 3-5 meters tall. The difference between them and small trees is that the bushes are dec that can branch without giving the trunk length.
  

• Medium Shrubs; They are plants that can be dec between 1.5-2 meters. It has functions such as providing privacy, visual control, wind control.

• Small Shrubs are plants that reach a height of 1-1.5 meters or less. Small shrubs are shrubs that provide a transition between medium and decumbent shrubs.

• Stunted Shrubs are plants that can be dec 30-100 cm apart, are at the level of a sitting person. They are plants that can be used for outdoor construction with small shrubs that do not interfere with vision.

• Ground coverers are the smallest group of plants in terms of size. It is a group that can usually be 30 cm tall, very close to the soil surface, almost conjoined development.

• Topiary Art: It is the art of giving the desired shape to the plant with the pruning technique when it comes to changing the natural form of a plant and making the desired form in the composition.

Classification of forms in plants

Form; Another important element in plant design is form. In general, the form of a plant arises under the influence of hereditary influences and ecological conditions. The basic form of a plant depends on its natural growth. The difference in plant species reveals different forms in different ecologies. there are 8 plant forms.

1. Oval-shaped ; Robinia Pseudoacacia

2. Columnar shaped; Taxus Baccata (Common Badger)

3. Large – spreading form ; Malus Floribunda (Ornamental Apple)

4. Round – Globular form ; Fagus Sylvatica (European Beech)

5. Picturesque-Landscape-shaped ; Bonsai Plants Sequoia Sempervirens (Coast Redwood)

6. Drooping form ; Salix Babylonica (Panicle Willow)

7. Creeping – spreading form ; Juniperus Sabina Tamarixifolia (Culture Juniper)

8. Picturesque-Landscape-shaped ; Bonsai Plants

The Element of Color in the Selection of Plants

It is one of the design elements that affects people the most. It is the color that best indicates whether the plants are suitable for the place where they grow. The color effect varies depending on the ecological conditions. Depending on the color used, a warm or cold effect also appears in the design. Even if the effects dec different between people, the psychological effects of color on people are generally the same.

In the landscape, almost everything is expressed in color. in the use of color, the flowers, leaves, stems, colors of plant material, plants that create a color effect with their leaves in autumn (dendrological properties) should be well known.

The Element of Texture in Plant Selection

In plant design, texture is the totality of the size and arrangement of branches, shoots or leaves, the length of the petiole, as well as their characteristics that vary depending on the season, such as coarseness, thinness, hardness, softness, weight, lightness, thickness, thinness.

The texture allows the designer to add interestingness and variety to the herbal composition.

Plants can be examined in 3 groups according to their texture characteristics, Thin, medium and coarse;

Coarse Texture, these plants give the feeling that they are approaching the sensor due to their properties. For example, it can be Platanus Orientalis (Eastern Sycamore), Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut).

Medium tissue plants, on the other hand, are more transparent and less powerful in terms of silhouette than coarse-textured plants. For example, it can be Melia Azedarach (Rosary Tree).

Fine-textured plants have completely opposite properties of coarse-textured plants. They are soft and gentle in appearance. For example, it may be Parkinsonia Aculeata (Pheasant Acacia).

I wish you all a pleasant reading in this article where I mentioned the importance and features of using plants for the profession of landscape architecture. Undoubtedly, our focus and task is nature and our ability to protect and maintain it. In doing so, I wanted to touch on the topic so that we would be aware and know the reasons. I hope it adds something to everyone.

When decorating our homes’ gardens, the face that speaks the loudest at first glance is undoubtedly the garden wall. Garden wall models leave an impression not only on visitors inside the garden, but also on people passing by on the street.
